As I have discussed in previous articles, there is a lack of knowledge with American tennis players at all levels, as to how well they understand the game and how well they understand their own game.  These players have been working on their techniques for years and have been fed balls as training.  Some of these players may look good, yet they struggle to compete, and have great difficulty in constructing points properly, which hurts their tennis careers drastically.  We have seen players that we think are good because they look good when they strike a tennis ball, but when they play a match or tournament, they end up being inferior players.  Part of the development of becoming the best tennis player you can be is by studying other players and how they construct points, and why they hit certain shots at certain times.  Studying tennis is an art and anticipating where the ball is going to be hit takes experience and knowledge about the game.

I hear it all the time from coaches that the player is too small or they do not possess a big enough weapon, so they have no chance of becoming a world class tennis player.  I usually just nod my head in agreement and start naming names in my mind that would prove them wrong in an instant, but I am not the type of person to be confrontational. You cannot measure the size of the heart or the smarts that one player possesses.

My best friend on the ATP Tour was Michael Russell.  This fellow Miami Hurricane held the number one ranking in the boys 16’s and 18’s in the United States.  As a freshman at the University of Miami he played number one on the team, attained a top five national ranking, and was an All-American, which is the highest honor you can achieve in college tennis.  After achieving all that success as an amateur, there is only one place to go to test your skills, and that is the ATP Tour. As the Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl junior international tennis tournaments are rapidly approaching here in South Florida, I noticed a new trend in the way colleges are recruiting their student athletes in order for their universities to compete well with their competition.  The last time I participated in the Orange Bowl was in 2001 and the competition was top notch with the likes of Janko Tipsarevic, Robin Soderling, Gilles Muller, Juan Monaco, and many other great players who were competing to win the prestigious event.
